Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
When Dr. Smith was in high school, he wanted to attend one of the United States military academies and serve his country in the Armed Forces. However, due to a certain dental condition, he was unable to pursue that dream. Thankfully, several years of orthodontic treatment helped to correct the problem, and the experience instilled in him a great desire to learn more about dentistry as a field. Eventually, he decided that he could still serve mankind in a positive, remarkable way by protecting the oral health and smiles of those around him – and he’s never regretted that decision.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After completing his undergraduate degree at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1982, Dr. Smith attended the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and achieved his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1986. Following graduation, he was able to continue his education at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and also received advanced training during his residency at the VA Medical Center, the Children’s Hospital, the O’Donoghue Rehabilitation Hospital, and Oklahoma Memorial Hospital.
Following this phase of his education, Dr. Smith served as an associate in a Oklahoma City dental office before opening this very dental office in 1988. Today, he still regularly pursues continuing education opportunities in his quest for clinical excellence.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Smith has been married to his best friend Leslye since 1983, and they have four wonderful adult children together. There’s Jessica and her husband Beau, Rachel and her husband Cody, Ashton and her husband Dylan, and their son Brett. They also have two precious grandchildren named Kinley and Camden!
Outside of working hours, Dr. Smith has always enjoyed watching his children participate in youth, high school, and college sports all across the US. His happy place is being able to spend time with loved ones at any beach, but especially ones in the panhandle of Florida. He is additionally extremely passionate about regularly embarking on international dental missions. He has worked many years with Pioneer Missions in South America to provide dental care in remote areas, having served patients in Brazil, Paraguay, and Chile. His group has also worked with construction teams to build chapels and share the Gospel in these areas. He’s even slowly learning to speak Portuguese!
